Retainers Long Beach, CA

For patients who need a minor alignment for their teeth or alignment care after braces, a custom-made retainer from Dentist of Long Beach will be just the thing you need to keep your smile healthy and straight.

What Is a Retainer?

After Dr. Hamid examines your teeth, he may prescribe something called an orthodontic retainer. These help to keep your teeth straight after you’ve received orthodontic treatment. They may also help to realign teeth as a stand alone correction for small overbites, snoring or breathing issues, or speech impediments.

What Types of Retainers May Be Used?

There are two standard types of retainers used in orthodontic treatments: removable and permanent retainers. Removable retainers are probably more familiar to most patients, but our orthodontist will make a recommendation depending on your specific correction needs.

Removable Retainers

Removable retainers, as noted, are probably more familiar to you. There are two types of these retainers. The first, more familiar style of removable retainer is known as a Hawley. These are made of plastic or acrylic materials with a metal wire. If properly cared for, these retainers will last up to 20 years. These retainers are adjustable and come in a variety of colors to suit your personal taste.

The other kind of removable retainer is a clear plastic retainer made of polyurethane or plastic. These last anywhere from six months to a year and are known for being exceptionally easy to work with and worn comfortably.

Removable retainers are often preferred over permanent retainers because they may be removed for eating and cleaning, reducing food restrictions. They also tend to be easier to maintain than permanent retainers.

Permanent Retainers

The other type of retainer is the fixed, lingual wire, bonded, or simply permanent retainer. These are made of copper, titanium or nickel wire. They cannot be lost, since they are permanently affixed to the teeth and durable.

Permanent retainers are exceptionally long-lasting, when properly cared for and may never have to be replaced. They may be harder to keep clean than removable retainers, since they are permanently adhered to your smile.

How Long Do You Have to Wear a Retainer for It to Work?

Many circumstances may dictate the length of time you must wear your retainer. While permanent retainers are worn all the time, removable retainers are usually worn for 22 to 24 hours each day for up to 6 months or longer after treatment with Invisalign®, porcelain or metal braces.

Additionally, some oral health concerns may require that the patient wear removable retainers indefinitely during sleep.

Your particular needs will be discussed with you during your appointment when a retainer is prescribed.

How Much Does a Retainer Cost?

Retainers are typically a very affordable option for most patients after their orthodontic treatment with braces. Some retainers start at around $100 and go up, depending on the type needed or chosen for your treatment plan.

Permanent retainers typically cost more than removable retainers, but insurance often covers the cost of these retainers as well.

What Does the Process for Getting a Retainer Look Like?

Typically, patients receive a retainer after they have benefited from their orthodontic treatments with braces. Sometimes, we see patients for new retainers that they received from a previous orthodontist or those who need only minor alignments.
