Wearing braces is only a small part of what orthodontics is. To make your journey to that lovely, straight smile easier, we at Dentist of Long Beach want to offer you these simple FAQs to make things just a little easier.

Orthodontics FAQs: Our Top 9 Most Commonly Asked Questions

What is Orthodontics?

Orthodontics, which may be referred to as dentofacial orthopedics, is the specialized branch of dentistry that deals with diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of facial and dental irregularities. Appliances used in this branch of care include metal braces, ceramic braces, clear aligners, retainers and headgear, as needed.

When Should You Begin Orthodontic Treatment?

There is no set age for when you or your child should begin orthodontic treatments. However, the earlier the treatment is begun, the better. Children as young as seven may start treatment and will find this is easier than it may be for adults. Children’s jawbones haven’t hardened as firmly, making the treatment more efficient.

Why Would Someone Need Orthodontic Treatment?

Your orthodontist may prescribe treatment for a number of reasons, including:

  • Underbite – When your lower jaw juts out past your upper jaw, causing your lower teeth to extend past a normal, healthy bite
  • Overbite – When your upper jaw overlaps your lower teeth
  • Crossbite – When the upper and lower teeth don’t meet properly
  • Crooked, misaligned teeth
  • Overcrowding of the mouth
  • Large gaps between teeth
Why Do You Need to Get Your Teeth Straightened?

Though straightening your teeth may seem to be more of a cosmetic matter, misaligned teeth, overcrowded mouths, overbites and other conditions are actually a matter of oral health, which impacts your overall health. When your mouth is in misalignment, serious issues may arise, including:

  • Cracked, chipped or broken teeth
  • TMJ disorder may develop – which may result in migraines and headaches or early onset arthritis in facial joints
  • You become higher risk for gum disease
  • You may develop sore facial muscles
Are Braces Beneficial for Adults, Too?

There’s no age limit for beginning your orthodontic treatment. Whether you’re seven years old or seventy, your mouth, jaws, and teeth need to have proper alignment for full health. You may begin treatment as young as seven years old, but there’s no upper limit. Approximately 25% of patients with braces and Invisalign® are actually adults.

The sooner you begin your orthodontic treatment, the sooner you may resolve some of your health concerns and be able to prevent or treat TMJ or cracked teeth.

Which Orthodontics Treatment Option is the Fastest?

Metal braces, ceramic braces, and Invisalign® clear aligners are beneficial treatments for more severe alignment concerns. Most patients wear any of the three treatments for one to three years, depending on a variety of factors. Traditional braces are typically the fastest treatment, but any of the three may prove fast, depending on the exact corrections you need.

Will I Need Tooth Extractions Before Treatment?

Many patients do not require tooth extractions before braces treatments begin. Typically, if you have overcrowding of the mouth or damaged teeth that would normally be extracted (such as wisdom teeth or badly damaged teeth), these will be extracted before your braces are applied or aligners crafted.

Can I Get Braces if I Already Have a Crown?

If you have existing restorative work, you are still a candidate for braces or clear aligners. Dr. Hamid will simply use a different adhesive for attaching braces to existing work such as crowns. These adhesives are designed to adhere to ceramic. Some bridges and implants may cause complications, however, but Dr. Hamid will make assessments based on these appliances to create your appropriate treatment.

Are There Other Appliances Besides Braces and Invisalign® in Long Beach, CA?

In addition to braces and clear aligners, there are several other appliances that may be chosen from by our doctor to treat your misalignments. These include:

  • Space maintainers
  • Headgear
  • Fixed or removable retainers
  • Palatal expanders
